A lot of web developers use Linux for their dev work. Well, it’s not the numbers that are important here. So why bother to make their browser on a platform that is used by less than 2% of computer users? Currently, the browser lags just behind Mozilla Firefox in terms of popularity with Google’s Chrome far far ahead but Microsoft wants that to change. Ubuntu for example is the king of the cloud and no one even comes close.īrowsers are windows to the cloud so it makes sense that Microsoft is pushing the new version Edge, which is now a Chromium-based browser. While Windows has always been the king of desktops, in the data centre Linux rules with an iron fist.

The cloud is where the money is these days as more and more services transition from the desktop to the cloud. Of course, this change of heart didn’t come after some selfless epiphany. Back then the CEO of Microsoft once labelled Linux as a cancer that needed to be destroyed. One thing that has changed drastically, something I never dreamt would happen, is the way Microsoft now embraces the Linux platform. But I think having the choice to not use their browser is better than having no choice to use it at all.I have been using Linux as my primary operating system for a long long time. Honestly, nothing Microsoft can do will ever be universally loved by Linux users.

Well, those who advocate for it say it’s fast, compatible, supports Chrome extensions, and has solid privacy settings (though some of those are enabled by default so be sure to configure things to your tastes if trying it out). Mozilla Firefox is arguably the most popular web browser with Linux fans, with Google Chrome or vanilla Chromium second place. We’ve updated our guide on how to install Microsoft Edge on Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and other Ubuntu-based distros to walk through all the (very simple) steps needed. If you want a beta or dev build you can head over to the Microsoft Edge Insiders website to download a copy instead. If you don’t have Microsoft Edge Dev or Beta installed you can download the official stable release from the official Microsoft Edge website for Ubuntu (and related distros) or Fedora (and related distros):
